Regarding the background of skills shortage and the interest of universities in exploiting new target groups, university continuing education has moved into the focus of the educational scientific community during the last years. To meet requirements concerning profiling and innovation, university continuing education promises a legitimation benefit for universities in the political discussion.

Beyond these programmatic perspectives volume 37 of the International Yearbook of Adult Education aims at giving insight into the research regarding university continuing education. On the one hand the issue includes articles concentrating on the development and regulation of university continuing education. On the other hand articles considering methodical approaches are involved.
